Getting started

Facial images are widely used as one of the methods for human identification. It’s a common practice for private or government organizations to issue identification documents including facial photos. A common problem with this kind of photo is its heterogeneous quality due to face size, face orientation, skin color, etc.

The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) leads one of the efforts to define:

(a) pattern for digital facial image quality;
(b) a format for facial image interchange that mets Common Biometric Exchange File Format (CBEFF) standard.

Griaule SDK ICAO Face 2008 is a library that allows the programmer manipulate and generate facial images according a set of photographic and digital requirements defined by ICAO . It also allows the programmer create and manipulate files according the Common Biometric Exchange File Format (CBEFF) for facial images .

ICAO Face 2008 library offers the following functionality:

  • Automatic face, eyes and mouth detection on colored facial images.
  • Creation of new facial image from an estimated rectangular region that mets ICAO requirements. That region is computed from eyes and mouth position and the final image creation includes rotation, scaling and cropping of source digital facial image.
  • Creation of memory buffer that mets CBEFF format and ICAO requirements for storing and exchange of facial images.
